Delft Pope John Paul II Plate

2

Pope John Paul II plate, with a lot of writing/markings on the back. This piece also came with an certificate of authenticity that states “from the windisch family” dated 1987.

Vraag

Is this plate one of a kind? Were these pieces made specially on request? I cannot find any other plate with this design and markings on the back including a certificate of authenticity.

This is a commemorative plate made by Westraven as indicated on the certificate and at the back of the plate. The certificate indicates production within their factory and is cataloged as Delft Blue, but it is not hand-painted. The print is applied using transfer technology, which is clearly visible at the bottom of the plate, at the button of the robe. The offset does not fit perfectly there. As far as the edition is concerned, it will not be limited as the items were sold as souvenirs but it's difficult to know how many they made. It's  considered "new". possibly desirable for the right collector. Authentic Delftware must have been made in a Delft Pottery and before 1850.

Kind regards, Franky

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Not hand-painted Due to historical research, we keep discovering more about the marks Delft potteries used. Would you like to learn more about these potteries? Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

Indeed made by Westraven, most likely there have been made more.
