Tile

2

Maritime themed blue and white tile. Blue has a greenish hue and background is off white. Back has a circle with an upside down T through it. There is also a 3 on either side of this mark, and a 10 below.

Vraag

I'm wondering which manufacturer made this tile. Is it Dutch? And how old it is. Thank-you.

German tile by Tonwerke Offstein (near Worms), c. 1900-1920. Decoration (in under-glaze technique) can be added elsewhere. The outlines of the ship and the vegetation seem to be printed (transfer print), then the design was further filled in with hand painting.

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more
