Bols Genever Jug

Erven Lucas Bols jug

Vraag

I am trying to date this piece. The initials appear to be VB which may indicate Pieter van den Briel 1753-1759.
Not sure if initials were used again later.

Hello,

Judging by the crazing on your jug I think it’s made somewhere early to mid 20th century. I don’t think it’s made in Delft either. The only Delft company I know of that produced for Bols around that time is the Porceleyne Fles. But your jug bears no markings for that company or any other manufacturer.

Kind regards,

Patrick

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

Thanks to Patrick for already discussing this piece. To my opinion also not Delft and 20th century.
