Vraag

I could not find anything on the mark on this piece. Royal Delft Museum staff suggested I contact you. They thought this piece is Tichlaar. Do you recognize the makers mark and an approximate age? Is it a factory or artist mark? I's a great piece with amazing decoration - even the back is fully decorated. Thank you.

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

In my opinion this is inspired on Delftware, but made in Desvres, France

Thank you - that is enlightening - and dispiriting. Oh well - I imagine there is a decent market for Desvres.  What things tipped you off? Not a Delft form? Not a Delft mark? This piece came with an ad from an old Antiques magazine with a near identical item pictured, said to be ca. 1825 Delft. I did some research about Desvres. I read they(Martel) used Delft marks written in reverse. Also that auction houses were fooled by their wares.  Do you have any tips on how I might ID this mark and it's maker?
