Plate

4

Fragments of the plate were found during archaeological research in Vilnius. The item was dated back to the 18th century and was attributed as an import of Delft pottery.

Vraag

Can this mark be attributed to a specific Delft pottery production workshop?
Could (and how) the chronology of this item be verified?
If possible, a reference to the relevant literature and sources would be very helpful.
Thank you!

It's not a mark but probably a lot or batch number. Indeed Delft around 1750.

Hi,

This can very good be delftware, but the colors are very strange. Perhaps because of the photo. Can you send new photo’s, also of the backside? Can you seen spur marks at the back of the plate?

Best wishes,

Suzanne Klüver

Dear Suzanne,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, there are spur marks on the back side. The mark on the plate seemed to be important for a more precise definition of provenance and chronology. However, as I understand it, this sign does not allow for a more specific definition of the production workshop.

Sincerely

Justina

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Can not be determined based on current information To properly assess this object, more information or more or better photos are needed.

Although I cannot be 100% certain based on the photos, my feeling says it is (was) an imitation plate from around 1900... 😔
