Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

Merk:

  • Zuid-Holland

The mark of the 'house' is called the Lazarus Gate (Lazaruspoort) found in Gouda, where this piece was made. It was used by The Zuid-Holland Pottery (Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland), refered to as 'Plazuid' from 1928. The W that seems to be striked through isn't how the factory put its 'years' on pieces (they used shapes at least until 1932). The W without a strike could be the signature of E. Wichmann who worked as a painter in 1928. That would give you a very exact date for this piece, however I am not 100% sure this is 'just' a W. Perhaps someone else recognises something else about it that could tell you more.
