Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Hand-painted An important characteristic of authentic Delftware is that it is hand-painted. Printing techniques do not occur on this earthenware. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

The vase was made at Plateelbakkerij en Pijpenfabrieken Zenith, fa P.J. v.d. Want Az.  (Gouda), which were operational from 1749 through 1984. Although it is dated 1946, somehow it even looks younger than that; could that be? Quality and decoration points to the 1980’s.

We bought this in 1976 or 1978. Thank you so very much for the information. This is so interesting and helpful. I will educate myself on this better as Delft is one of my favorites. I always find something new to see when I look at my pieces. Best to you and yours. Kate

The editor's answer is incorrect, the decoration has nothing to do with hand-painted, is adhesive plate via screen printing, glazed technique, three oven courses. The vase is a side vase of a cabinet set, the number 1946 is the model number belonging to this model, regards jvdh.
