small single handle handpainted dish

4

It might be a candy dish, handle is just decorative? Has a bird painted inside. The signature on the back is like an L with an S thru it.
I have seen this sig on one other bird plate online but could find no other info.

Vraag

Can you tell me who painted it and when? I assume it is authentic.
Thank you for your help.
NF.

Has nothing to do with the authentic Delft pottery from the period from around 1650-1850, is new, second half of the 20th century, completely hand-painted, underglaze painting, the so-called new technique, made at Kunstaardewerkfabriek 'Velsen' in Sassenheim, province of South Holland, The Netherlands. In 1950 the first painted products were delivered, starting with the numbers 1001, 1002, 1003 and so on. On your product under the word Holland an initial (-K) of the pottery painter(s), who? The history of the company, with slightly different names and different owners and other products (art deco) and a different place (Velsen, province of North Holland) ran from 1920, the company stopped in 2003. Your product is a test, imitated from a bowl made of earthenware in the past, mainly used as a brazier in a stove, greetings jvdh.

I bought this small dish from a second hand store, it was very inexpensive, and will give it as a gift to a Dutch friend. I am always interested in pottery that is signed....and I like when it is older and not damaged. I think this is from the 1990's? But the handpainted art work is lovely and I was very happy that you could tell me about Velsen and the Kunstaardewerkfabriek!  I have read all about it thanks to the info you provided.  I very much appreciate your prompt reply..     Thank you and merci,     N. Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Hand-painted An important characteristic of authentic Delftware is that it is hand-painted. Printing techniques do not occur on this earthenware. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more
