Plate Société Céramique Maastricht?

Handpainted plate with decor looking like “kraak” inspired

Vraag

Bought this plate from a garage sale, was really puzzled by the signature on the back - interlaced S and C, couldn’t find anything on the internet. Then found on marketplace two items with same signatures, one specifying Maastricht, both described as coming from Société Céramique Maastricht. All look handpainted, and rather vintage than antique. Any idea from what period is this, and what factory-workshop? I thought that SCM were only doing mass-production. Many thanks for all ideas!

Hello,

As you already found out, it is indeed made (handpainted) by Société Céramique Maastricht in probably the 1950s. Please see: https://delftsaardewerk.nl/bekijken/voorwerp/kaatje1/3919-aardewerk-met…

Het SC-monogram werd vermoedelijk gebruikt tussen 1925 en 1955 (A. Polling, Maastrichtse ceramiek, Merken en dateringen, Lochem 2006, p. 104).

"The SC-monogram was probably used between 1925 and 1955"

Kind regards,
Patrick

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Hand-painted An important characteristic of authentic Delftware is that it is hand-painted. Printing techniques do not occur on this earthenware. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

Thank you for your accurate contribution Patrick!
