twisted handle vase

A twisted handle vase with a lid and chinoiserie decor

Vraag

I was wondering if this vase was a 20th-century production (possibly early 20th-century?) or an antique 18th-century. There is a mark but it doesn't look like the antique AR marks. Thanks!

Hello,

Your first thought was correct, it is indeed an early 20th century reproduction with a fake mark.

Kind regards, Patrick

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Tin-glazed earthenware Earthenware with a glaze to which tin oxide has been added to make it opaque white. Delftware produced before 1850 is always covered with a tin glaze. Read more
  • Forged mark In the 19th century, a financial incentive arose to sell more new earthenware as antique Delftware, sometimes even bearing forged Delft factory marks. Read more

Merk:

  • AR False

Too good to be true, indeed a later reproduction.
