Pierced urn

Not sure whether this is Delft as I cannot find anything like this on the web and I cannot find the backstamp anywhere. But it shows yellowish clay where damaged. It has been suggested that this is an early Joost Thooft piece.
Would appreciate any help. Thank you. Hilmar Bosch South Africa

Hi Franky,

Many thanks for your comment - I forgot to add the photo of the signature, I will try and do so now.

Kind regards,

Hilmar (South Africa)"Blue Urn"

It is a signature I cannot find anywhere.  The clay is a light yellow-cream colour - I can send close-up photos of the chipped areas and the base which is not glazed.

The height is 27cm - I purchased it this morning on an auction

Hello Franky, thank you again for all your help - really appreciated!!

Have you any idea as to the age of the piece or where I can find more information on it?  I am 82 years old, still hold a Dutch passport, born in Kenya.  I have always been interested in Delft.

Kind regards,

Hilmar

Hi Franky,

Once again, many thanks for all your help. I have also written to Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum and they will contact me soon. The photo of the potpourri below is very similar to the one I have.

Thank you again for all the time you have put in to helping me. I will not forget it.

With best wishes,

Hilmar

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Tin-glazed earthenware Earthenware with a glaze to which tin oxide has been added to make it opaque white. Delftware produced before 1850 is always covered with a tin glaze. Read more
  • Hand-painted An important characteristic of authentic Delftware is that it is hand-painted. Printing techniques do not occur on this earthenware. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

With thanks to Franky Stevelinck for the details
