Porto Rico Large Tobacco Jar

3

Large tobacco jar with floral/avian detailing.

Vraag

This tobacco jar is described as an '18th Century Dutch Delftware Faience
Tobacco Jar'. The design is unlike anything I've previously seen in typical 18th C delftware so I'm skeptical the description is accurate. Has anyone seen a design like this? Any opinion on age/if the 18th C date seems accurate? Finally, would a lead test of the glaze help with verifying the age?

I suspect a copy as it is only painted on one side. it probably also included a lid made of copper or brass. The painting seems to me to be insufficiently detailed compared to the original versions. Someone else may know more about this, but I would locate it somewhere in Northern France. the color also differs from authentic Delft.

Here is an example of a French copy from around 1830 painted on both sides.

kind regards Franky

Unfortunately your Tobacco jar is VERY late 19th. century or even 20th. century.

WIth kind regards, Edwin van Drecht.
