Dear fryedesigns, thanks for reaching out. This platter does not seem to be Delftware. It looks to be part of a service, produced in the 19th century. This pierced cover would have indeed rested inside a larger oval platter with flaring edges. On top you would place food that needs to drain and not sit in its own fluids; think especially of fish.
