rumor has it that these tiles originated from my great grandmother's home. My mother (b1931 Hoofddorp) got them when my Oma (b 1903 somewhere in the Haarlemermeer) died. But they may have come from my Opa's family hom, his father (b 1864) was the one time owner of De Beurs also in Hoofddorp.

Vraag

Any information regarding the possible age and make would be of interest.
I have 3 more tiles as well.

All 3 tiles are original Dutch Delftware polychrome tiles dating from app. 1625-1640. With kind regards, E.

Geachte Mevr. van de Hoorn, Zou u mij kunnen uitleggen waarom dit niet is vast te stellen? Een ieder met enige kennis van zaken kan snel zien dat dit originele tegels zijn uit de door mij genoemde periode. Met vriendelijke groet, E.

Bedankt voor uw reactie. Ik ben het volledig met u eens dat het hier gaat om Nederlandse tegels uit de periode 1625-40, maar het is - in ieder geval voor mij - niet vast te stellen of ze in Delft zijn gemaakt. Deze website specialiseert zich dan ook niet in tegels.

Ik begrijp wel dat het nu lijkt alsof niet vast te stellen is of ze überhaupt origineel zijn, daarom heb ik nu toch aangegeven 'Delfts, tussen 1620 en 1850 gemaakt'.

Geachte Mevr. van der Hoorn, Mag ik misschien voorstellen dat het een goed idee is om die opties niet meer te gebruiken want die zorgen voor grote verwarring. Een vraagsteller heeft niets aan dit soort zeer algemene / ruime beantwoordingen. Als gezegd er zijn voldoende kenners op het gebied van Delfts EN tegels die de vragen snel en goed kunnen beantwoorden.

Thank you for your impressions.  Sadly I never wrote down the memory my mother had of these tiles, but it is exciting to think that they might be so old.

Tiles with birds painted according to the same design (but with different corner motifs) have been found in the center of Gouda. Some examples have been published by Freek Mayenburg and Leen den Toom in the book 'De Swaen. Geschiedenis en productie van een Goudse plateelbakkerij uit de zeventiende eeuw' (Gouda/Otterlo 2002), ill. 91 and 110. A similar tile with fritillary flower (now also with the same corner motif) is depicted on p. 63 as a relatively common decor in Gouda.

It is therefore likely that the tiles were made in Gouda, the tile factory of Willem Jansz Verswaen was founded in 1621. I totally agree with the dating by Edwin van Drecht.

Van de miljoenen tegels die in Nedderland zijn vervaardigd is maar een fractie ervan in Delft gemaakt, het is beter te spreken van Nederlandse tegels dan van Delftse tegels (o.a. C. H. de Jonge, J. D. van Dam), hierbij een afbeelding van een Goudse tegel, in bezit van een zus van me, gevonden 6 km buiten Gouda, er zal door de tegelschilder een ponsief zijn gebruikt. Op de plaats waar ooit in een ver verleden in Gouda pottenbakkerij ’de Swaen’ stond verrezen appartementen, een gevelsteen ter herinnering werd geplaatst, hoek Oosthaven-Lange Noodgodstraat, groet jvdh.

Of the millions of tiles manufactured in the Netherlands, only a fraction of them were made in Delft, it is better to speak of Dutch tiles than of Delft tiles (including C. H. de Jonge, J. D. van Dam), hereby an image of a Gouda tile, in Owned by a sister of mine, found 6 km outside Gouda, a ponsive must have been used by the tile painter. At the place where the pottery 'de Swaen' once stood in Gouda in the distant past, a memorial plaque was placed on the corner of Oosthaven-Lange Noodgodstraat, greetings jvdh.
