My wife inherited two wll plates or chargers which we belive to be Dutch Delftware. Both plates have figures. One showing a seated couple (man and women) with a monkey and a putti with the inscription de:smatck. on the front and no marks on the back. The other shows a seted couple with the man playing a musical instrument, a putti by the lady and the inscription f:Ge:hoor: on the fron and no marks on the back
Vraag
Are these plates Dutch Delftware.? When were they made and by whom and what is the significance of the inscriptions

These are two boards from a series of five. It is supposed to depict the five senses. namely smell, hearing, taste, seeing and feeling. Authentically dated to the end of the 17th-beginning of the 18th century, but I suspect later (re)production here. Probably someone can go into more detail here. Very nice pieces though.
Hieronder een voorbeeld uit deze reeks . Below is an example from this series made at the end of the 17th century, also unnoticed but no hanging holes and lighter color. Also note the difference in spelling. On your dish is written "de smaek". on the authentic simply "smaeck"

I am 80% convinced these are genuine. Cannot be fully sure with these photo’s as it is hard to judge the color blue and the shine of the glaze. Also the painting itself is ok, but not as detailed as the other examples kindly given by Franky. Stodel Antiques in Amsterdam is also selling an example with a Smaeck plate (Karrewiel).

In my humble opinion these plates are later reproductions . It's indeed very hard to judge without handling the plates.

Dear Kevin,
Thank you for your pictures. As you can see there is some discussion about the origin of these plates. The pictures are not giving enough information about the color of the glaze and blue. Can you send us better pictures? A little sharper and lighter would help.
Thank you

Dear Suzanne
Many thanks to you and your colleagues for your interest in our plates . There are two plates but unfortunately I don't seem to be able to attach two photos so I will send two replies.
The plates are much more blue in real life. I think the background colour is affecting my photos. Our plates are similar in colour to the one shown in the reply from Franky Stevelink above.
Look forward to hearing from you
Kevin

Hello Kevin, Somewhere they rang a bell...Now 24 years ago I was asked by Jonathan Horne / The famous London dealer, if these 2 chargers from a client were original. To my opinion BOTH are second half of the 17th. century. Unfortunately both with serious cracks, probably caused by the wooden frames. Regards, E.

Hello Edwin. You have an amazing memory, they are indeed the same plates you saw 24 years ago. The history is that my wife (who is now 78 as is I) remembers the plates from her childhood home in Dublin, Ireland. Where or how her father acquired them she does not know. When her father died in 1991 she inherited the plates and since we then lived in London, took them to Jonathan Horne for his opinion. She didn't know that he had consulted you, but he advised her that they were second half of the 17th Century but that the wooden frames were much later, probably late 19th century and should be removed because they probably had caused the then cracks. He also arranged to have them professionally restored.
The reason why we are making enquires now is that we are doing an inventory and I wanted to be certain that our memory of what she was told is correct. We would also like to know what the inscriptions mean, or are they makers marks?
Very lovely! Thank you Edwin.
PS: In my earlier note I forgot to answer in English. Sorry about that.
Hello Jeroen and others, I did not see only the photos but I ALSO saw / examined them.
Regards, Edwin.
Hello Edwin, now I can see your point!!! These are the exact same plates. 😅
They have been restored quite well, so it seems.
Thank you for clearing that up.
Hello Kevin, Jeroen and others. Thank you. Jonathan Horne was THE EXPERT on English Delftware but not on Dutch Delft. Therefore he always consulted me, I am always happy to help, answer immediately and never ask a penny. Inscription: De Smaeck means: The taste...'T Gehoor means: hearing/sound. These 2 chargers belong to a serie of THE SENSES, Feel, taste, sound, smell and vision/to see. Regards, Edwin.

Hello Edwin. Thank you so much for your kind and informative help. (By the way just for accuracy, I made a mistype in my earlier email, my wife's father died in 2001, which is when she inherited the plates and took them to Jonathan Horne, which coincides with your recollection)
We think they are very attractive and will treasure them even more in understanding their history thanks to you and all the other "Super Users"

Dear Kevin and others, Thank you! Since early age I am interested in early Delft, material before 1660 and always liked these chargers. For that reason I was so happy that I managed to acquire a perfect, near identical charger, See photo. Mine is in mint condition, zero restoration. With kind regards, Edwin van Drecht. Ps. Also published in my book, 1993.
That sure is an amazing and wonderful story!!!
Thank you all for sharing!
